I want to thank all those people who took the time to email me in regard to the article I wrote 2 months ago about the Dangers of Being An Organ Donor and of having a ‘living will.’ I am very glad that the article generated such a tremendous amount of interest as I had hoped it would. I just give thanks that in the age of centralized power where most of mainstream news is controlled by the interests of the few, that there are still real investigative reporters out there willing to put themselves on the line to expose those who endanger the public trust through policy whether purposeful deceit and/or through dangerous ignorance. It is the job of moral journalism to provide information to the public which will allow them to be the best informed that they can on any given issue so that in being informed, citizens can make the best decisions possible to protect themselves and their families from policies which threaten the common good. This month I tackle another controversial topic- one which greatly affects all of us, vaccinations, but more specifically Thimerosal. Since the 1930s, Thimerosal had been added to vaccines as a preservative to boost drug company profits, allowing vaccine makers to package multi-use dosages in bulk instead of individual doses. The thimerosal preservative prevents bacteria from growing within the vaccine when the needle is dipped in and out of the vial to draw another shot. The FDA estimates that it’s use in more than 30 licensed vaccines and biologics even though there have been publications in the most respected journals of medicine since the beginning of its introduction as a preservative on the market; warning about the dangers of mercurial based agents as preservatives to make vaccines multi-usable.

“Internal documents reveal that Eli Lilly, which first developed thimerosal, knew from the start that its product could cause damage -- and even death -- in both animals and humans. In 1930, the company tested thimerosal by administering it to twenty-two patients with terminal meningitis, all of whom died within weeks of being injected -- a fact Lilly didn't bother to report in its study declaring thimerosal safe. In 1935, researchers at another vaccine manufacturer, Pittman-Moore, warned Lilly that its claims about thimerosal's safety "did not check with ours." Half the dogs Pittman injected with thimerosal-based vaccines became sick, leading researchers there to declare the preservative "unsatisfactory as a serum intended for use on dogs." – RFK, Jr.

In 1997, with the passing of the FDA Modernization Act, all products containing mercury were to be tested for adverse effects to people and environment. Soon thereafter the FDA ordered Thimerosal removed from over-the-counter products. “Once the amount of Thimerosal in vaccines was finally measured in 1999, the FDA discovered that children were receiving more than 100 times the EPA’s safe limit for mercury by 18 months of age and yet officials allowed the preservative to remain in vaccines. To this very day flu vaccines given to pregnant women and 6 month old babies contain a full dose of Thimerosal.” – Evelyn Pringle

Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.’s article “Deadly Immunity” brought modern focus back on Thimerosal. He released a series of articles in Rolling Stone magazine and at salon.com in which he alleges a cover-up of the link between Thimerosal and Autism, claiming that in 2000, the Centers for Disease Control convened a top-secret meeting of 52 health officials, government scientists, and representatives of major vaccine manufacturers, not to decide how to go public with the information and create a contingency plan to help those affected by the criminal negligence of the vaccination companies; but instead spent the 2 day conference deciding how to spin the negative results of studies implicating autism with the increase in thimerosal containing vaccines required by the immunization schedule for newborns, infants, and children.

The epidemic grew quietly from the early 1930’s until autism became regularly visible - a part of the fabric of America. The number of vaccines added to the ‘required’ immunization schedule rose dramatically for children, from 1 (small pox) in 1948, to 21 from 9 in 1991, to 33 or 34 doses of nine or ten different vaccines in 1998. We are told that nobody had considered what the accumulation of thimerosal from all ‘required’ vaccines would do to the developing minds of children receiving all these ‘necessary’ shots.

Kennedy wrote, “I devoted time to study this issue because I believe that this is a moral crisis that must be addressed. If, as the evidence suggests, our public-health authorities knowingly allowed the pharmaceutical industry to poison an entire generation of American children, their actions arguably constitute one of the biggest scandals in the annals of American medicine.”

Whether one agrees or disagrees with Kennedy’s allegations, at least now this issue is in the forefront of American consciousness and with a whole generation of children and their families negatively impacted, this issue won’t just disappear as I am sure some big money interests would hope it would. How do we know that this purported meeting took place? SafeMinds.org, an advocacy group of parents who believe that their autistic children were damaged by thimerosal, used the Freedom of Information Act to obtain records showing that as early as December 1999 the Centers for Disease Control knew that the amount of mercury contained as standard for vaccines given in the first three months of life would dramatically increase the risk of autism in children who received those vaccinations.

An FDA study found that vaccines administered over the past decade have tripled the dose of mercury that infants got in their first few months of life and as many as 40 million American children may have been exposed to mercury in excess of Environmental Protection Agency guidelines. The CDC and the FDA had recommended in 1991 that three additional vaccines laced with thimerosal be given to extremely young infants; the estimated number of cases of autism then increased fifteenfold, from 1 in every 2,500 children to 1 in every 166 children. On February 15, 2005, the GAO, released a Report titled, "Special Education Children With Autism," that revealed the number of children ages 6 through 21 diagnosed with autism receiving special education services has increased more than 500% over the past 10 years.

Transcripts of the Simpsonwood conference available at safeminds.org showed attendees, many of which were heads of pediatric hospitals, more interested with protecting the pharmaceutical companies’ profit, than with preserving and serving the public health. They discussed ways to “handle” future lawsuits, and of how to keep this away from the public. Those that had assembled were not allowed to speak about thimerosal outside of those gathered and were reminded that “there would be no making photocopies of documents, no taking papers with them when they left.” In that secret meeting, Tom Verstraeten, a CDC epidemiologist who analyzed the agency's massive database of over 100,000 children’s medical information, declared to the 52 gathered that thimerosal appeared to be the culprit for a dramatic increase in autism, attention-deficit disorder, and other speech and behavioral problems.

In an interview with Joe Scarborough on MSNBC, Kennedy, Jr. answered when asked - “Why are they sitting back — if our children are being poisoned, if the science is there. Why are they sitting back and letting our children be poisoned? Kennedy: Because the same regulatory bureaucrats that green-lighted Thimerosal originally are now trying to cover their tracks. We now have the transcripts of the secret meeting that they did in Simpsonwood, Georgia, in the year 2000. And it's the most horrifying thing that you can read, Joe. There are scientists there from the government who are saying — who are reading the reports and saying, this is undeniable. There's no way we can ever deny this. I am not going to give this to my children, but now let's hide this from the American people. And it's that clear. And this is what I write about. It's this language that I write about in the "Rolling Stone" and the "Salon" piece that is so shocking, where we have the guys who are supposed to be protecting Americans` health who are actually conspiring to keep this stuff in the vaccines.”

While vaccine makers scramble to protect themselves from allegations, Dan Olmstead of UPI, did an ongoing series of articles entitled “The Age of Autism” in which he investigates the Amish population of Ohio and Pennsylvania, searching for medical staff or families comfortable with talking about the autistic experience. He wanted to know if the Amish community would reflect the national average of 1-in-166 when it came to neurological Autism Spectrum Disorders.

After an exhaustive and lengthy search, Olmstead writes, “June 14, Washington, D.C. (UPI) – Readers of this column have reacted strongly to our series of reports on autism among the Amish. So far, we have found only a handful of cases of autism and have quoted some experts who think it is nearly non-existent in this group.” The Amish of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, refuse to immunize their infants. Olmsted calculated that there should be 130 autistics among the Amish. He found four - one exposed to high levels of mercury from a power plant and the three other had received their vaccines.

“In 1977, a Russian study found that adults exposed to much lower concentrations of ethylmercury than those given to American children still suffered brain damage years later. Russia banned thimerosal from children's vaccines twenty years ago, and Denmark, Austria, Japan, Great Britain and all the Scandinavian countries have since followed suit. ‘You couldn't even construct a study that shows thimerosal is safe,’ says Haley, who heads the chemistry department at the University of Kentucky. ‘It's just too darn toxic. If you inject thimerosal into an animal, its brain will sicken. If you apply it to living tissue, the cells die. If you put it in a petri dish, the culture dies. Knowing these things, it would be shocking if one could inject it into an infant without causing damage." – RFK, Jr.

Knowing what I just revealed, parents must be thinking how do I keep my child safe from harmful vaccines and still have them be able to attend day care or public schools. It has always been assumed that in order to enroll in day care or attend public schools, children must participate in a mandatory vaccine program or not be allowed access to these facilities. According to a report by the General Accounting Office released in 1999, over the 1990s, an estimated 12 million vaccinations were given each year and more than 40 million children vaccinated.

Parents can do two things – 1) absolutely insure that the vaccine given to their child is single dose without thimerosal or 2) forgo the vaccine completely. If you do the first realize single dose vaccines are not common because they are more expensive to create. Be sure to read all labels and packaging that came with the vaccine shot to insure single dose thimerosal free.

Contrary to claims of necessary ‘mandatory’ vaccines, all states provide ‘religious’ exclusion from forced immunization. The New Atlantean Press publishes a small booklet, How to Legally Avoid Vaccines in All 50 States, which summarizes the vaccine laws throughout our country. America can no longer depend on the governing bodies of institutions put into place to protect the people to do so. Regulatory boards are continuing to overlap the concerns of big business with their own and are willing at all cost to protect business interest over concerns for the welfare of the people. “Indeed, in the tight circle of scientists who work on vaccines, such conflicts of interest are common. Rep. Burton says that the CDC ‘routinely allows scientists with blatant conflicts of interest to serve on intellectual advisory committees that make recommendations on new vaccines,’ even though they have ‘interests in the products and companies for which they are supposed to be providing unbiased oversight.” – RFK, Jr.

We cannot either depend upon some of our most respected elected representatives in Congress. “Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, who has received $873,000 in contributions from the pharmaceutical industry, has been working to immunize vaccine makers from liability in 4,200 lawsuits that have been filed by the parents of injured children. On five separate occasions, Frist has tried to seal all of the government's vaccine-related documents -- including the Simpsonwood transcripts -- and shield Eli Lilly, the developer of thimerosal, from subpoenas. In 2002, the day after Frist quietly slipped a rider known as the "Eli Lilly Protection Act" into a homeland security bill, the company contributed $10,000 to his campaign and bought 5,000 copies of his book on bioterrorism. The measure was repealed by Congress in 2003 -- but earlier this year, Frist slipped another provision into an anti-terrorism bill that would deny compensation to children suffering from vaccine-related brain disorders.” – RFK, Jr.

J.B. Handley, father of a three-year-old autistic boy and co-founder of www.generationrescue.org says his son has been transformed by chelation (key-LAY-shun) therapy – a technique that involves using doctor-supervised pills or creams to induce excretion of mercury and other toxic metals. Handley among other families of Generation Rescue approach autism and other neurological disorders as symptoms of mercury poisoning due to the thimerosal found in vaccines. They advocate the thimerosal was responsible for symptoms in their children whether the government and pharmaceutical companies will own up to that responsibility or not. While chelation has been used for 40 years as a treatment for lead and other heavy metal poisoning, it is still unproven and highly controversial. Handley says, “Chelators are being used right now to recover thousands of autistic children from their 'autism' by pulling the mercury and other toxic metals out of their body so our children can again lead a normal life." The Handleys say more than 5,000 autistic children have been treated with chelation from only 10 in 2000.

“The story of how government health agencies colluded with Big Pharma to hide the risks of thimerosal from the public is a chilling case study of institutional arrogance, power and greed. I was drawn into the controversy only reluctantly. As an attorney and environmentalist who has spent years working on issues of mercury toxicity, I frequently met mothers of autistic children who were absolutely convinced that their kids had been injured by vaccines.
